Donate To A Fund

The Foundation frequently receives inquiries from professional athletes and others who ask about ways in which they might give to girls’ sports and honor someone important to them, while possibly receiving tax benefits. Some athletes establish 501(c)(3) organizations to provide funds for programs in their communities and actually conduct programs. Others establish donor-advised funds within the Women’s Sports Foundation.

We welcome you to review some of the programs we have established with generous donors.

Lissa McLean/Tuti Scott Internship
An endowment was established in 2003 by Lissa McLean and Tuti Scott, who believe in the value of sports participation for girls and women and are both passionate supporters of women’s basketball. These two women and George Casey, McLean’s husband, donated funds from their estates for the Women’s Sports Foundation and invited their family, friends and colleagues to annually support the internship program of the Women’s Sports Foundation. McLean was a women’s history supporter and ardent fan of the WNBA. She worked for 20 years in accounting for the state of Michigan, where she was a leader in establishing best practices in business and bringing women to the forefront of management within the state government. She was a season ticket holder for the Detroit Shock and the Washington Mystics and attended every WNBA All-Star game. McLean brought new fans to each game and introduced them to the magic of the game of basketball. Her legacy in women’s history is notable as she was a collector with more than 300 titles of biographies and a funder who supported preserving the stories of women through her generous gifts to the National Women’s History Project.

Brenda Reilly Advocacy Hotline
The Brenda Reilly Advocacy Hotline (1-800-227-3988), is the first line of support for any and all gender equity issues that come to the Women's Sports Foundation - parents, coaches, athletes, administrators - who are questioning whether there is fair and equitable treatment in their sport or work experience. We are proud to associate Brenda's name to this important component of the WSF work. The interns and staff who respond to these calls are top notch individuals who handle every caller with amazing care, effort, and expertise. This important fund honors Brenda and her career and carrying on her passion and work on gender equity.

Janet T. Swanson Memorial Fund
This fund was created by an endowed gift from Dr. Donna Lopiano, former CEO of the Women's Sports Foundation, in memory of Janet T. Swanson for her support of women and girls’ health issues and success in life through sport. A significant part of Janet's philanthropy and the things that gave her the most joy, were making special things happen when other funding sources were unavailable and good work needed to be done. Ms. Swanson was an avid supporter of the Foundation since 1995 and over a five-year period created opportunities for advancement of the organization’s mission with unrestricted gifts whenever asked. Honoring her joy in giving and her willingness to be spontaneous, this fund establishes a perpetual tribute and legacy.
